Grand Concert Build
The Grand Concert was originally designed in the mid 80's to suit the adventurous players of the time that. These players needed an instrument that would cut through a mix and could accommodate some unique fingering technique while also looking cool at the same time.
This is exactly what this shape does. Its small body means that the mids and high range are more pronounced over the low end and it is easy to get your hands around. This means that not only is there less body to get in the way but this little guitar is perfect for fingerstyle players who want to be able to choose whether they sit out of the mix or push through.
What makes this guitar even more cool and suited to finger picking styles is the use of Hawaiian Koa for the entire body which not only looks stunning but has a great sound that focuses on the mids and highs. Out of the box it may sound quite like maple but as time goes on and the guitar ages it will open up wonderfully expanding the mids leaving you with a sweet resonant tone that will be the envy of all other guitarists.
The other cool thing they did with this shape is slightly increase the width of the neck. This change might seem a little bit odd to some but what it does is make certain techniques such as tapping cleaner and easy to play perfect for those who like to be a bit experimental with their sound.
ES2 Pickup System
The ES2 pickup system is unlike anything we have ever heard before. Its ability to reproduce the sound of your guitar through a PA system in unparalleled. So no matter if you are live, at home or at the studio you can quickly and easily amplify or record the sound of your guitar without the need of an intricate mic setup. Of course nothing will replace a microphone but if I had to choose a supplement the ES2 would be up there.
The thing that separates the ES2 is the placement of its piezo pickups. While most manufacturers place them underneath the bridge where they in theory pick up the movement of the saddle. Taylor instead place the pickups behind the saddle where it captures a much more realistic and resonant sound when compared to the normal bright sound of piezo systems.
